Ene. 19, 2024México: Driscoll’s invierte más de US$ 7 millones en ampliación de vivero de frutillas
US global provider of fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries, Driscoll’s, celebrated the inauguration of an extension to its strawberry nursery network in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. The new facility will allow the company to cater to demand in Jalisco, Michoacan, and the Bajio region, boosting local economic development.
In a press release, Driscoll’s explains that it invested US$7.1 million in the expansion and could double its investment by 2027. The expansion is expected to generate 500 jobs in the first three years of operations, says the company.
The nursery has two watering containers, a drip irrigation system, and a substrate that promotes water conservation, improves plant quality, and automates irrigation, allowing for efficient use of resources. UV treatment technology will also be employed automatically to prevent pests or plant contamination. Applying the latest technology ensures product quality and reduces water resource consumption, says the company.
In Mexico, Driscoll’s has nurseries in Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Jalisco, where seed patent propagation functions are carried out in tissue culture laboratories. The mother plants of strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are sown in these nurseries.
Berries were Mexico’s third-largest agri-food product exported globally in 2019, reaching a value of US$2.6 billion. Berries are cultivated in the Northern, Western, and the Bajio regions. Mexico also holds the fourth position globally as a berries exporter, contributing 10.2% to the world’s total consumption.
