EE.UU: Temperaturas récord afectan estados de Oregon y Washington
Scorching heat compounded by stifling humidity is expected to linger through the end of the month in many parts of the US, where millions of people will likely endure temperatures above 100 degrees.
Seattle ties record for most 90-degree days in a year
The temperature hit 90 degrees around 3 p.m. at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). That makes for the 12th 90-degree day this year.
The record for the most 90-degree days in a year in Seattle was originally set in 2015, with 12, according to KING 5 Meteorologist Chris Nunley.
The Seattle area had a record six straight days of 90-plus degrees at the end of July. That was the longest stretch of days at that temperature in the 77 years records have been kept.
A daily high record was broken in Olympia and Shelton. In Olympia, the high was 91 degrees and the record was 90 in 1987. In Shelton, the high was 94 degrees when the record was 89 degrees in 2003.
There is a Heat Advisory in effect until 9 p.m. on Wednesday. It spans from the north near Everett through the southwest interior of western Washington.
The high temperatures will pose a risk of heat-related illness. NWS suggests drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room staying out of the sun and checking up on relatives and neighbors.
Temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s are expected to stick around for the rest of the work week. The weekend is expected to bring temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s.
Portland’s hot summer ties a record for most 100-degree days at 5; Wednesday will be cooler
Portland reached 100 degrees Tuesday, tying a record for most days in a year with high temps greater or equal to 100-degrees. The record is five days.
That 100-degree reading also broke the record for the date of 98 degrees set in 1987. The other years with five days of high temps greater than or equal to 100 were 1941, 1977, and 2021.
And we’re not done with hot weather yet. The National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory through Friday as warm temperatures in the 90s will hang around through the week.
The weather service says some cooling from marine air and stronger onshore flow will drop high temps in the metro area about 10 degrees Wednesday. Portland’s high should be about 91 degrees under sunny skies.
Coastal clouds could make it as far as Kelso early in the day and the southern Willamette Valley could stay cooler due to clouds and stronger marine air pushes. The Columbia River Gorge will stay hot, and could see some stronger wind gusts of up to 25 mph later Wednesday. Much of the gorge is under a red flag warning due to gusty winds and high fire danger. The warning expires at 8 p.m.
The ridge of high pressure strengthens Thursday keeping clouds anchored to the coast and leaving Portland with sunny skies and a high of about 91 degrees.
Forecast models are not in complete agreement about Friday’s weather. It should be mostly sunny, but there’s a wide range of possible high temps from about 82 to 99 degrees. If an incoming weak system off the coast makes it into the metro area, we’re likely to have a cooler day. If it remains west of the Coast Range, and high pressure dominates, Friday could be in the 90s. The weather service has split the difference and expects high temps to reach about 87 degrees.
What’s left of the weak system off the coast is likely to make it into the valleys later Friday night and into Saturday morning. The holiday weekend will start off with morning clouds, then clear to mostly sunny skies. The high will be about 84 degrees, closer to average for early September.
Extended forecasts are looking at increasing temperatures Sunday and Monday to round out Labor Day weekend.
