Dic. 2, 2021Columbia Británica: millonarias pérdidas y grave daño a industria de berries y vegetales por inundaciones
The B.C. Blueberry Council estimated 2,500 acres of blueberries have been impacted by the flooding, with about 1,000 acres still underwater in the Sumas Prairie. The Ministry of Agriculture reported about 80 acres of raspberries were swamped, as well as about 4,000 tonnes of stored and unharvested field vegetables, such as cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots and leeks.
The financial losses will be in the millions-of-dollars, said Tom Baumann, professor emeritus at the University of the Fraser Valley. Blueberries take up to 12 years to come into full production, while raspberries take three or four years and strawberries two or three. While most field vegetables are annuals, meaning they’re planted each year, fields will need to be tested for soil contamination and then remediated. Perennials, such as flower bulbs, rhubarb and greenhouse crops like endive, could take longer to re-establish.
