Abstract
Summary
The request received and the outcome of the safety evaluation is summarised below:
The Food Standards Agency, UK, requested for evaluation of the additive, 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)propanoic acid, esters with C13-C15 branched and linear alcohols with the CAS number 171090-93-0 and the European Commission reference number (REF. No.) 47060, for use as an antioxidant in all polyolefins at a maximum content of 0.06% w/w for contact with dry and aqueous food types at room temperature for a long period and in contact with boiling water for 15 minutes. The dossier was submitted on behalf of Chemtura Manufacturing UK Ltd.
The CEF Panel concluded that there is no safety concern for the consumer if the substance is used only in polyolefins in contact with foods other than fatty/high-alcoholic and dairy products and its migration does not exceed 0.05 mg/kg food.
