PALMA de Mallorca has lost up to half of its almond trees due to low profitability, high harvesting costs and strong competition from the US. The situation has been described as critical. According to figures from Mallorca’s Agriculture Council, almond production in the last five years has fallen by 32 846 hectares. In 2005 there were 57 289ha of almonds in production, now there are just 24 443ha.
