May. 10, 2012Frutillas/Polonia: cosecha 2012 se vio severamente dañada
Strawberry and some stone-fruit crops are under serious threat in Poland this season. Farmers from southern regions and some central regions of Poland are especially concerned about it.
The crops have been affected by the extreme weather conditions during the winter and frost in February which saw temperatures drop to -30°C.
Jan Nowakowski from Genesis Fresh explains that the strawberry crop could be down by as much as 25-30%, meaning higher prices for the fruit and less export to destinations such as Germany, Czech Rep, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine, Russia, but also to France, the Netherlands, Austria. The blueberry should not suffer as much, if at all. It could see a 5% drop but this will be compensated by increased production.
A frost has been forecast for the coming week but if it not too severe further damage will be limited.
