Exportación hasta la semana 29 (22 de julio incluido) era 4% menos que el año pasado
Up to and including week 29 (22 July) the export of Dutch tomatoes was 4% less than last year. Less was exported to Germany (-13%), the United Kingdom (-5%). Sweden (-3%) and France (-28%).
Poland (+10%), Italy (+3%), Czech Republic (+49%) and Russia (+58%) imported more Dutch tomatoes than last year. Without the EHEC-crisis, when 38 million kgs. of tomatoes were removed from the trade, export would probably have been bigger than last year. The decrease in the export to Germany was biggest in week 22 and 23, after that the export remained smaller than in previous years, but the differences were becoming smaller as well.
Number of German buyers recovering
The EHEC-breakout in Germany has especially in June influenced the consumer confidence. In July and August the percentage of households buying tomatoes increased again. But it is not only the EHEC-crisis, the weather also plays a role. When the weather is good more vegetables, such as tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce are sold than when the weather is cold and rainy.
