INDIA is now the fourth largest buyer of almonds from Almeria, despite not having bought any product from the origin three years ago. Between January and September 2011, India bought more than EUR400 000 worth of Almerian almonds, double that of the previous year.
According to the delegate of the Agriculture and Fisheries Council, José Antonio Salinas, Germany is the region’s biggest buyer of almonds. During the first nine months of this year, it imported EUR5.2 million worth of the nut from Almeria, at 53.6% of the total. Italy is the second biggest destination with almost 34%, followed by France with 5.3%. Some shipments have also been made to Libya, Denmark, the Netherlands and the UK.
