Duraznos/Grecia: industria espera producción similar a la del año pasado
Greece is expecting a good peach crop, but some contacts are concerned that the industry will lack the finances to process the raw material. A well-placed source says the industry is expecting “more or less last year’s production.”
A Greek trader said: “The weather has been excellent so far and it looks like there will be a large crop, but the question is, will we have the finances to take advantage of it? Can the farmers afford to harvest? This will affect packers, too. With a seasonal industry like this, you need pre-financing. The question is who will get this, given that banks are undergoing recapitalisation, and whether what they get will be enough. It is not cheap to borrow from banks anymore. Both Greece and Spain are struggling with financing.
