Bélgica: Productores reclaman que los precios están altos para las frutillas y cerezas (texto en inglés)
The demand for cherries was less than in the previous month. Strawberries are, however, selling very well. “The prices are good for both products. Strawberry prices are very high for this time of year. During Wimbeldon prices always rise, but this year it has been very high”, says Marc Lambeens of Fruit Vandepoel in Brussels.
Smaller supply of cherries
He said that the cherries’ quality is very good, but that it is evident in the sales of this product that the Belgian holidays have begun. “We are selling more cherries at the coast at the moment, where the holidaymakers are. There is, as a result of the frost in April, a smaller supply of cherries this season. This means the prices are staying high. Buyers are paying between Eur 6 and 7 for nice, plump 30+ cherries. The average is between EUR 4.5 and 5.”
Marc expects the season to end sooner than usual. “Last year we lasted until the end of July, but I do not think we will make it to the end of the month with cherries. All the cherries at Fruit Vandepoel are sold under the Lowie label. We find the best growers and nicest cherries for this.”
The trader says that strawberries are very expensive at the moment. “The demand is very high, which results in good prices, even for those of poorer quality. The prince increase started this week. Before that the price was a bit lower. The warehouses are determining prices at the moment.”
